All set for 13th African Games

Barely 14 days to commence the 13th African Games dubbed “Accra 2023”, the media on Thursday was taken through some comprehensive steps regarding the games. The seminar, geared towards media operations, international game coverage, and more, took place at the Sunlodge Hotel in Accra.

With over 5,000 athletes and game officials attending this major event, the Local Organising Committee understands the role of the media in upping fans’ interest in patronizing the games hence the need for timely and accurate coverage from the media.

The competition will take place in ten (10) different venues across Accra and Cape Coast. Apart from the women’s football event, which will take place in Cape Coast, all other disciplines will take place in Accra.

Eight (8) of the disciplines will serve as qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. They are wrestling, tennis, cycling, athletics, swimming, badminton, table tennis, and triathlon.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister for Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif mentioned benefits Ghana will derive from hosting the games.

Certainly! Let me rephrase that for you:

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, highlighted the advantages that Ghana will gain from hosting the African Games. He said bringing the games to Ghana has the potential to significantly boost key commerce sectors, including transportation and tourism.

Often, in tournaments like this, media outlets will want to telecast live however, the exclusivity lies with the state broadcaster, GBC.

Addressing the media on the issue of who owns the rights to telecast the 13th African Games in Ghana, the Acting Director of Marketing at GBC George Lomotey, has cautioned against people who would want to pirate from the source.

Over the years, the state broadcaster, GBC, has worked around the clock to acquire exclusivity in terms of coverage for the people of Ghana.

Meanwhile, the president of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana Kwabena Yeboah encouraged journalists to seize the opportunity and get familiar with the terminologies associated with each discipline.

He further, emphasized the need to build networks during the games.

The games is slated for March 8 to March 23, 2024
