I am extremely proud of parliamentary candidates – John Mahama

Former President and flagbearer of the NDC, John Mahama has commended the NDC’s parliamentary candidates for their victories.

In his address at the party’s news conference on Monday 8, January, he described them as “giant elephant killers”, celebrating their success in overcoming a 63-seat deficit, positioning the party for a potential majority in parliament.

“This historic feat after one term demonstrates the strength of our great party and the strength of the mandate given to us by the good people of Ghana to lead,” he stated.

Mr. Mahama emphasized the NDC’s working majority of 140 seats in the Parliamentary election but raised alarm over alleged attempts to tamper with the results in 5 constituencies.

He highlighted divergence in vote counts and called these actions a deliberate effort to undermine the people’s choice, casting doubt on the integrity of Ghana’s democracy.
“In respect of the presidential election, figures from various sources indicate attempts to manipulate results in favour of the incumbent,” Mr. Mahama stated.

The NDC’s flagbearer further drew attention to the traditional 72-hour period for final election result declaration to ensure comprehensive collation, contrasting it with the rushed 24-hour declaration by the Electoral Commission.
“We will not accept anything less than legitimate results that point to an NDC parliamentary majority,” he said.

The former president was not happy at Ghana’s decline into what he termed a “historic low” at a critical moment of election results declaration, expressing concern for the nation’s hard-earned democratic transparency and international reputation for free, fair, and non-violent elections.

In closing, he reassured voters, saying, “Your vote will count. The voice of the people is the voice of God. Let us move forward with the belief that God is on our side.”
