Kayayei Empowerment Programme: “We Have Proven the Naysayers Wrong” – Dr. Bawumia

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has affirmed the success of the Kayayei Empowerment Programme, saying the initiative has defied skeptics.

When the hostels and training centers at the Madina Social Centre were inaugurated, Dr. Bawumia recounted that, “There were many who thought it was not a realistic promise; they thought it was not possible. They said it was a 419 scheme, but I knew that it was possible for us to do it.”

He emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the poor and vulnerable, saying, “A society that does not take care of its poor and vulnerable is not a good society. Since we came into government, we have been thinking very much about how to take care of the poor and vulnerable among us.”

Dr. Bawumia highlighted several government initiatives to aid the less privileged, including support for lepers, street children, and persons with disabilities, as well as the provision of free hydroxyurea and childhood cancer treatments under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

He also mentioned the benefits brought about by the Zongo Development Plan and the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, which has alleviated financial burdens for vulnerable parents.

“What we are doing today is part of a whole program of activities by our government to help the poor and vulnerable,” Dr. Bawumia stated, expressing his pleasure and pride in the achievements of the Kayayei Empowerment Programme.

The inauguration is a significant milestone in the NPP’s ongoing efforts to uplift the socio-economic status of marginalized groups in Ghana.
