National Road Safety Authority PRO cautions road users ahead of the festive season

Christmas travel is sometimes said to be the worst time to drive due to the rather heavy traffic.

With the Christmas season getting into full swing, the Public Relations Officer of the National Road Safety Authority, Mrs. Pearl Adusu Sateckla is cautioning road users ahead of the Christmas holidays to be mindful on the road and refrain from excessive speeding.

She explained that for the purpose of safety on our roads, drivers need to reduce their speed and adhere to speed limits on the road, reminding travellers not to pester drivers to overspeed to their destinations.

In an interview with RGG News, she mentioned that visibility at this time of the year is poor, making it critical for drivers to be extra cautious and guard against over speeding.

“The harmattan season has started and there will be blurred vision especially as the rainfall season has gone far into the year, so the road might be slippery and foggy, so please we all need to be careful whether you are a pedestrian or driver,” she said.

She added that, as individuals have fun with their families and friends in this festive season, they should not drink and drive as it puts lives and properties in danger. She suggests that they rather park their cars or decide not to drink at all.

As part of the plans towards the yuletide, she stated that the National Road Safety Authority is playing a major role in educating the public on road safety management through broadcast, print, and social media.

Also, the NRSA engages in outreaches at terminals, lorry stations, religious organizations, markets, and schools.

According to her, from January 2023 to October, there has been a consistent decline in the statistics for road accidents and it is the desire of the Authority that it is further reduced or maintained.

“We are hoping that this yuletide, the crashes will reduce so that we will maintain or sustain the decline that we have had in the past years,” the PRO stated.

She ended by urging all stakeholders practically the law enforcement agencies to strictly enforce road traffic regulations highlighting the need for road users to abide by rules and regulations on the road.
