Public Opinion Divided Over Ghana Government’s Passport Fee Hike

Effective April 1, 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs adjusted passport application fees.

The standard service fees for a 32-page booklet have gone up from GH¢100 to GH¢500, and for a 48-page booklet, from GH¢100 to GH¢644.

For expedited services, applicants will now pay GH¢700 for a 32-page booklet and GH¢800 for a 48-page booklet.

Following the government’s decision concerning passport application charges and fees, some Ghanaians shared their views with RGGNEWS.

In an interview with RGGNEWS, Kwesi Ofori said Ghanaians are already paying higher sums of money to “Goro boys” for expedited passport services, and he doesn’t see anything wrong with paying the new fee to the government when they are already paying unofficial fees to civilians.

He further stated that every applicant must be ready to pay the fee required for the passport.

With a contrasting view, Yaa Bentum, a trader at the Madina Market, criticized the government for the increase in the passport fee.

She told RGGNEWS that the new fees were outrageous though they needed to be increased.

Nhyira Manarh, a student at the University of Ghana, expressed frustration with the fees, stating, “They have outrageously increased the passport fees when we already have to hustle to obtain them.”
