There is no shortage of food in Senior High Schools – Ministry of Education

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, Kwesi Kwateng, has clarified that recent videos of food scarcity in SHS’ circulating on social media are misleading.

In an Interview with RGGNEWS, he explained that the videos depicting shortages were from last year and do not reflect the current situation in Ghanaian SHS’.

Mr. Kwateng mentioned a recent ministry visit to several SHSs, where they found ample food supplies.

However, Speaking to RGGNEWS, Dr. Peter Anti Partey Executive Director of the Institute for Education Studies (IFEST) mentioned that the government should have a corresponding plan towards the increase in student enrollment.

Dr. Partey suggested that the government implement decentralized food distribution processes to manage increasing student enrolment effectively.

Nonetheless the spokesperson further stressed that budget allocations for SHSs are proportionate to student enrolment, ensuring adequate funding per student.

Regarding the Planting for Food and Jobs policy in SHSs, Mr. Kwateng acknowledged that it is a well embraced policy, necessitating its extension across all sectors.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to providing quality and timely food distribution to support the Free SHS policy and enhance learning outcomes for students.
