WAEC to Introduce Three New Courses in BECE

Final-year Junior High School (JHS) students across the country are readying to absorb three new subjects in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School Candidates.

The newly introduced subjects are Career Technology, Creative Arts and Design, and Arabic.
Career Technology and Creative Arts and Design, which were derived from the previous Basic Design and Technology (BDT) course, will be mandatory for all candidates, as confirmed by the West African Examinations Council .

In respect of these additions, the 2024 examination period will extend to six days, as opposed to the previous five. The examination is scheduled to commence on Monday, July 8, 2024, and conclude the following Monday, July 15, 2024.

WAEC says this year’s BECE candidates will be the inaugural group to undergo the examination under the Common Core Curriculum. Consequently, WAEC has outlined that school and private candidates will face different examination structures due to the implementation of this curriculum.

The new curriculum aims to enhance the quality of learning experiences by shifting the focus from memorization to the acquisition of critical learning skills.
