1000 programmes approved by GTEC

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has given its approval for more than 1000 programmes to be offered by public universities in the country.
Dr. Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, the Director-General of GTEC, mentioned the crucial need to establish a new institution to oversee the implementation of programs by public universities.
Dr. Jinapor advises that it is essential for institutions to remain focused on their specific areas of expertise and adhere to their designated mandates. He believes that institutions cannot afford to engage in a wide range of activities without maintaining a clear direction.
For instance, he raises concerns about technology institutions offering programs in local languages such as Akan, Twi, and Dagbani, which he believes should no longer be the case. The proposed body, therefore, aims to ensure that institutions stay within their areas of specialization and that the programs they offer align with the country’s developmental goals.
Additionally, Dr. Jinapor argued that, “such programmes should not feed into saturated markets of this economy.”
