Court To Hear Bail Application of Man Charged in Robbery of Wife of Late Former Vice President Amissah-Arthur and Another

The High Court in Accra has set May 13 to hear a bail application for Yahuza Osumanu a self-styled businessman alleged to have robbed the wife of the late former Vice President K.B. Amissah Arthur and several others. Osumanu is facing 26 counts of robbery and money laundering. His lawyer Paul Abariga pleaded for an adjournment to study the prosecution’s affidavit in opposition to the defence bail application.

The court was expected to hear the bail application today but the defence lawyer submitted that he was served the said affidavit just some few minutes to the hearing and would therefore require time to study the document before presenting his arguments for bail. The prosecution is expected to file all witness statements by May 21. The facts before the court indicate that last December 5, 2023 at about 4am, the Tesano Police Division received information that Mrs Matilda Amissah Arthur had been robbed at her residence in Accra.

The police accordingly dispatched a team to the crime scene but on their arrival, the accused person had fled. It is alleged that Yahuza demanded money and valuables and succeeded in robbing her of various currencies. The accused allegedly also made away with a gold watch valued at 20 thousand cedis and necklaces with a value of five thousand cedis. The prosecution led by State Attorney Amanda Awadey further informed the court that Yahuza allegedly assaulted Mrs Amissah-Arthur by strangling her and hitting her head repeatedly on the ground while demanding for more property. Mrs Amissah-Arthur reportedly lost consciousness.

After regaining consciousness, she realised Yahuza had bolted with the items. The prosecution continued that Mrs Amissah-Arthur called the police guard on duty at her residence and asked him to look out for the accused. The guard spotted the accused as he was escaping from the house. He pursued the accused person who abandoned a safe he was carrying but managed to escape. The police later obtained CCTV footage from the crime scene where Yahuza was identified. He is alleged to have been on the police wanted list for his involvement in robberies at Cantonments, Airport Residential Area, Ridge and Tesano. A list of his victims includes renowned architect David Adjaye.
