Electoral Commission Reverses Course on Removing Indelible Ink

The Electoral Commission (EC) has reversed its decision to eliminate the use of indelible ink in the 2024 general election in December.

Following strong opposition from stakeholders, including political parties, Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, the Deputy EC Chairman stated the commission’s change of plans in an interview with JoyNews.

Dr. Bossman Asare acknowledged the concerns raised and stated that, “After listening to the discussions, we have heard the concerns of the public; we have heard the parliamentarians; we have heard the concerns of the NPP and the NDC and civil society members so we have concluded that if by using the ink people will have more trust in the process, why not?”.

Adding that the initial aim was to eliminate double verification in the voting process but acknowledged the importance of maintaining confidence in the biometric register.
