Kwaku Kwarteng to Lead Economic Committee in Parliament

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has reassigned Obuasi West MP Kwaku Kwarteng to chair the newly established Committee on the Economy.

This development follows accusations against Kwarteng, who currently chairs the Finance Committee, of hindering the approval of tax waivers for companies under the One District One Factory policy.

The announcement, made during Parliamentary proceedings on Friday, June 28, caught many Majority MPs off guard, leading to some disappointment among them.

The newly established Economy Committee, formed under the latest standing orders, consists of Members of Parliament (MPs) with expertise in economics. This committee aims to strengthen Parliament’s capacity to provide and obtain professional economic advice. Additionally, it acts as a platform for interaction among parliamentary leaders, the Media Relations Department, and the Parliamentary Press Corps.

Despite its limited power compared to the Finance Committee, Kwarteng’s reassignment marks a notable shift in parliamentary leadership.
