NCCE on Tuesdays District Level Elections

It is the duty of the National Commission for Civic Education to promote and sustain democracy while inculcating the awareness of the rights and obligations of Ghanaians through civic education.

As the country readies for the District Level election on Tuesday December 19, 2023, the National Commission for Civic Education is stimulating enthusiasm for the District Level election. One major challenge impeding the exercise is voter apathy.

But the NCCE believes enough public education has been carried out to whip up the interest of voters.

Local level elections present the most practicable opportunity for citizens to participate actively in choosing their local representatives to the various metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.

This national exercise is crucial to the country’s democratic process. It will take place in over two hundred and 60 districts across the country.

The NCCE says the election has always had a 30 percent turnout which is unacceptable.

The NCCE Chairperson, Ms Kathleen Addy, believes if the local assembly members are voted for, along political lines, it will make the representatives more accountable to the people, meaning they can be axed for non-performance, which will then make the exercise more attractive.
