NPP Parliamentary Primaries: Dome-Kwabenya


In Saturday 27th January 2023’s NPP primaries, one seat to keep an eye on is the Dome Kwabenya Constituency. Now this seat is being contested by three strong contenders. Their fate, their stance and their ability to lead shall be decided upon the conclusion of these primaries. Presenting themselves as the embodiment of grace, intelligence, and determination are Sarah Adwoa Sarfo, Sheela Sakyi Oppong, and Michael Ocquaye Jnr, the only male sandwiched between the two women.

As she readies for the race, the incumbent Member of Parliament is tightening her seatbelt, fully prepared to face formidable opponents such as Michael Ocquaye Jr., CEO of the Ghana Freezones Authority, and legal practitioner Sheela Sakyi Oppong.
Sarah Adwoa Sarfo’s unwavering dedication and extensive expertise make her a good candidate worthy of support. Sarah Adwoa Sarfo, a distinguished Member of Parliament hails from the Dome-Kwabenya constituency. She says she is poised to make her mark in Saturday’s primaries.
Born on Monday 28th of December, 1981, she has consistently displayed a thirst for knowledge, having acquired numerous academic certifications. Notably, she has achieved two separate Master’s degrees in the field of law, solidifying her standing as a respected lawyer.
Sarah Adwoa Sarfo has an impressive record as a three-time Member of Parliament, having served in the 6th, 7th, and currently the 8th Parliament, where she represents the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency.
She was a deputy majority leader in the 7th Parliament and became the first woman in Ghana to rise to such a position in Parliament under President Akufo-Addo. She has served as Minister of State for Procurement, Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, among others.
Her commitment to public service is exemplified by her active involvement in various parliamentary committees, including the Judicial Committee and the Poverty Reduction Strategy Committee. Nonetheless the primaries will be fiercely contested.

Sheela Sakyi Oppong
In a remarkable turn of events, Sheela Sakyi Oppong, a legal practitioner, has declared her intention to represent the Dome Kwabenya constituency in parliament for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). Her
decision means she is rolling up get sleeves to unseat the incumbent Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, who has presided over this constituency since 2012.
Sheela Sakyi Oppong possesses a remarkable blend of expertise and experience. Serving as the head of strategic planning and implementation and legal advisor at the Office of the First Lady of the Republic, she also holds the position as the head of the Rebecca Foundation. For her educational accomplishments, she holds degrees in both law and economics. Additionally, her career spans across both the private and public sectors, including notable stints with the World Bank.
Sheela Sakyi Oppong has also played s role as the Private Sector Development Policy Advisor at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ghana. Notably, she has successfully facilitated lucrative business opportunities for numerous Dutch companies in Ghana and has opened doors for Ghanaian businesses to flourish in the Netherlands. Furthermore, her expertise as a Lawyer with S.K. Boafo & Co has allowed her to cater to the needs of various private and public sector clients.
Nevertheless, securing the Dome Kwabenya seat will pose a formidable challenge for her, as Sarah Adwoa Safo, has consistently triumphed with considerable margins in previous elections. Adwoa Safo’s illustrious standing within the NPP and her former role as Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, until her recent relocation to the United States, further attest to her credentials.
It promises to be an interesting race between these two remarkable women and Mike Ocquaye Jnr hopes to captivate observers, presenting a significant examination of Sheela Sakyi Oppong’s political acumen and the NPP’s openness to welcoming fresh perspectives and innovative concepts.
The constituency of Dome Kwabenya has long been a battleground for political contenders, with a track record of propelling its victors to great heights. The outcome of this fiercely contested seat will undoubtedly shape the future of both the NPP and Ghanaian politics, given the constituency’s substantial number of registered voters.

Michael Ocquaye Jnr
Michael Ocquaye Jnr, a lawyer and C.E.O of the Ghana FreeZones Authority is once again contesting in the race for the Dome-Kwabenya constituency.
The Laywer, lost to the incumbent Member of Parliament Adwoa Sarfo in the last parliamentary primaries of the party in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency.
This will be his third time competing since 2011 and 2019.
Dr Ocquaye Jnr will face off incumbent Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo and a new contender and another lawyer, Sheela Sakyi Oppong.
The NPP has announced that all is set for Saturday’s exercise.
