Primary elections for NPP Parliamentary Aspirant list Approved

On Wednesday, January 17th, 2024, the National Executive Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) formally approved the list of parliamentary candidates aspiring to be the flagbearers at the constituency level.
The NPP’s parliamentary primaries will take place on Saturday January 27th, 2024.

Richard Ahiagbah, the National Communications director of the NPP, says he is disappointed with the number of incumbent members of parliament who have decided not to run in the 2024 election.
In an interview on January 18th, 2024, Mr Ahiagbah expressed the hope that the retiring MPs would still find ways to contribute to the nation’s development, such as through consultations.

He also hoped that incumbent MPs participating in the primaries will return to the House after the 2024 election to mentor new MPs.
Mr Ahiagbah is optimistic that this time around, the party will reclaim the 60% of seats that the NDC took from the NPP by January 7th, 2025.
When asked about separation powers in Ghana, Mr Ahiagbah mentioned Article 78 of the constitution, which requires a majority of ministers to be selected from parliament. He acknowledged that while it does not enforce the separation of powers theory in governance, it would however require an amendment to address this issue.
