Road Safety Update 2023

The National Road Safety Commission has released data which points at a significant drop in road crashes in Ghana in 2022.
14,135 incidents resulted in 2,276 fatalities and 15,409 injuries, marking a 4.49% reduction compared to the 2023 figures of 14,960 crashes, 2,373 deaths, and 15,690 injuries.
Noteworthy statistics from last year include 1,806 male and 470 female casualties.
The Greater Accra Region reported the highest fatalities at 4,797, followed by Ashanti with 2,312 deaths and the North West Region with 41 deaths.
The crashes involved 233 pedestrians, 8,084 commercial vehicles, 10,769 private vehicles, and 5,147 motorcycles.
Mrs. Pearl Adusu Sateckla, the Public Relations Officer of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), cited distracting driving, speeding, wrongful overtaking, and tyre bursts as primary causes of accidents.
The PRO said an average of six to eight people lose their lives daily, affecting the nation’s socio-economic development and human resource.
In a plea to transport operators, Ms Adusu urged “strict enforcement of traffic rules and regulations, calling on the public and drivers to prioritize road safety for the well-being of lives.”
