Steel Bridge at Saikope-Mepe collapses

A steel bridge at Saikope in the Mepe area, connecting the North Tongu town of Juapong, to the Central Tongu capital town, Adidome, has collapsed.

According to eyewitnesses, the collapse occurred when a fully loaded trailer carrying salt attempted to cross the bridge. The trailer was believed to be over the recommended maximum weight of 25 tonnes, and the bridge could not withstand the weight. The driver and the mate escaped unhurt.

The North Tongu District Chief Executive (DCE), Divine Osborn Fenu, visited the accident scene and described the situation as a huge challenge to the district, which was yet to recover fully from the ravages of the recent floods that hit the area as a result of the Akosombo and Kpong dam spillage. He said all relevant stakeholders had been informed about the incident, and that swift efforts were underway to seek a remedy to the situation.

For now, all motorists have been re-routed through Dadome, to Adidome in the Central Tongu District, and then to Juapong.

The collapse of the bridge has caused significant inconvenience to the local community, making it critical for a new bridge over the river.
The incident highlights the importance of maintaining infrastructure and ensuring that they are safe and secure for public use.
