The leadership of the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) will today, Tuesday, March 5, 2024, hold a meeting with Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah to chart the way forward for some reduction in transport fares since prices at the pumps have been dropping.
The meeting with the sector minister has come about due to the incessant calls for an increase in transport fares since prices at the pump continue to rise.
Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Abass Imoro, told RGG News on Monday, March 4, 2024, that the meeting with the minister will determine the way forward for transport fares.
According to him, it will be unfair on the part of the union if the prices at the pump continue to go up, but fares remain the same.
Meanwhile, the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana on Monday announced a 30 percent increase in transport fares effective March 7, 2024.
The two organisations attributed the fare increase to the government’s failure to address their concerns adequately.
They highlighted the continuous surge in fuel prices, which has significantly impacted their livelihoods and made it challenging to sustain their operations.
