World Environment Day 2024

The annual global observation of World Environment Day, on June 5th, serves as a reminder of our collective duty to care for the environment.

This United Nations day for awareness creation encourages individuals and communities to adopt sustainable practices, conserve resources, and advocate for eco-friendly solutions.
Actions like planting trees, reducing waste, and supporting renewable energy can contribute significantly to protecting our planet.

The theme for the 2024 commemoration is “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.” This focus is particularly urgent given the alarming statistics highlighted by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification: up to 40% of the planet’s land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population.

Moreover, the frequency and duration of droughts have increased by 29% since 2000. Without urgent action, droughts could impact over three-quarters of the global population by 2050.

In Ghana, AROCHA is marking the occasion with a public forum to promote agroecology and environmental sustainability. This event underscores the need for community engagement and innovative solutions to address pressing environmental challenges.

World Environment Day 2024 calls for worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment, emphasizing that every effort counts towards ensuring a thriving future for our planet.
