World Meteorological Day 2024: Urgent Call for Climate Action

The World Meteorological Organization is drawing attention to the significance of predicting weather changes and climate change mitigation, as it commemorates World Meteorological Day. On this day, 23rd March, 2024, the WMO says it aims to help people lead a healthier life by predicting weather changes.

The celebration was established by the WMO in 1950.

As the world commemorates this day, the focus is not just on the past achievements but on the pressing challenges of the present and the future.

With the theme “At the Frontline of Climate Action,” World Meteorological Day 2024 highlights the critical role of meteorology in tackling the existential threat of climate change.

In an interview with RGGNEWS, Mr. Fredrick Cudjoe from the Central Analysis & Forecasting Office of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMET) gave some more details on the day’s significance. “World Meteorological Day serves as a platform to raise awareness about the importance of meteorology, particularly weather and climate, within our country,” he pointed at.

Mr. Cudjoe highlighted the agency’s commitment to addressing climate change by focusing on key factors such as human activities, industrialization, and urbanization.

He highlighted the agency’s efforts in educating the public, particularly the youth, about climate change through various initiatives. These include engaging senior high schools, establishing climate clubs in schools, and conducting awareness campaigns.

As part of this year’s celebrations, GMET introduced a seasonal forecast covering the entire year. The idea is to provide more accurate weather predictions.

Mr. Cudjoe encouraged Ghanaians to follow their weather forecasts closely to stay informed and prepared.
