World Refugee Day Today

Today, June 20th, is World Refugee Day, an international observance dedicated to honouring the resilience and courage of millions of refugees worldwide. Established by the United Nations, this day serves to raise awareness about the challenges faced by refugees who have fled their homes due to conflict, persecution, or violence.

The theme for World Refugee Day 2024 is “Everyone is Welcome,” emphasizing the importance of global unity and inclusion in supporting refugees. It calls for communities around the world to embrace refugees, offer assistance, and provide opportunities for them to rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.

In Ghana, a country known for its welcoming approach to refugees, over 13,000 individuals from diverse backgrounds, including Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, Liberia, Nigeria, Syria, and Yemen, have found refuge. These refugees are supported by the Ghana Refugee Board (GRB) in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other humanitarian organizations. The GRB works tirelessly to ensure refugees receive protection, assistance, and access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities.

As the world continues to face complex humanitarian challenges, including forced displacement, World Refugee Day serves as a reminder of the need for compassion, understanding, and collective action. It underscores the importance of protecting refugees’ rights and ensuring they are afforded the opportunities to rebuild their lives with dignity.
