Ghana and Zambia Strengthen Bilateral Ties, Sign MoUs on Trade and Defence Cooperation

Ghana and Zambia have committed to enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade and investment, following a visit by Ghana’s Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey to Lusaka, where she met with President Hakainde Hichilema.

President Hichilema underscored the importance of economic stability and development for both nations, emphasizing the role of trade and investment in fostering political stability.

During the visit, Foreign Minister Botchwey and Mr. Mulambo Haimbe, acting Zambian counterpart, signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to promote various forms of cooperation between the two countries.

One MoU focuses on enhancing commercial, economic, cultural, technical, scientific, and political ties, while the second MoU centers on defense collaboration, including training and development initiatives.

Additionally, discussions were held regarding Foreign Minister Botchwey’s candidacy for Commonwealth Secretary-General, with Zambia being one of the African nations within the 56-member organization.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government are set to select a new leader in October, following the completion of Baroness Patricia Scotland’s final term at the end of 2024.
