Chief Justice Requests OSP’s Response

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has requested that Special Prosecutor, Mr. Kissi Agyebeng provide his comments on the matters raised in the petition, which was forwarded by President Akufo-Addo.

According to the Chief Justice, this is to determine if a prima facie case has been established.

The petition, submitted by former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu, calls for Mr. Agyebeng’s dismissal and is dated April 30, 2024. It alleges procurement breaches in the purchase of vehicles for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and accuses Mr. Agyebeng of misconduct involving judges and the administration of justice, thus seeking his removal as Special Prosecutor.

Martin Amidu’s petition includes claims of violations of citizens’ rights through arrests and detentions, breaches of the right to information, and improper personnel appointments at the OSP.

The impeachment process appears to be linked to a controversial press conference held by Mr. Agyebeng, during which he alleged that judges conspired against him.

The former Special Prosecutor argues that these remarks constitute abuse of judges and damage the Judiciary’s reputation.

This development follows reports that Mr. Agyebeng refused demands to resign, opting instead to publicly express his frustrations with his role.

Additionally, Martin Amidu claimed that Mr. Agyebeng violated the rights of individuals such as Cecilia Dapaah and Prof. Frimpong Boateng by arresting them.
