A Programs Officer at the Media Foundation for West Africa Kweku Krobea Asante, has cautioned the media not to be in a hurry to declare election results.
He said calling election results ahead of the statutory declaration by the mandated body, the EC, could jeopardise the electoral process and lead to destabilisation of the country.
In an interview with RGG News, Mr. Krobea Asante asserted that the media’s penchant for being the first with the news can sometimes override the need to cross-check facts and figures.
He therefore pleaded with media houses to make fact-checking a priority when reporting on election results from various polling stations.
“The media should not be in a rush to sacrifice accuracy on the altar of speed. Whiles every media outlet seeks to be the first to break the news, they should make sure they do not go ahead of the EC”, he said.
He urged the media to immediately correct any misinformation when they make any errors.
