KAIPTC Begins Migration Management Course

In our interconnected world, the movement of people is even more dynamic than ever. As borders blur and opportunities beckon, the need for expertise in managing migration is more critical. Twenty-eight (28) participants from ECOWAS are receiving instruction in migration management at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping and Training Centre in Accra. In the next two weeks, the focus will be on migration management in West Africa.

Migration of various forms has occurred in West Africa in recent years due to population pressure, poverty, economic recession and endemic conflicts. In pre-colonial times, people migrated mainly in search of security and fertile land for farming. Presently, migration in West

Africa is rooted in socio-economic, political and historical-cultural factors which have shaped the direction of development. Other reasons are rapid rise in population and growth in labour force, unstable politics, escalating ethnic conflicts, economic decline and environmental deterioration. The migration management course in Accra will promote practices fundamental to managing the movement patterns in West Africa.

The government of Switzerland, major partners in the programme, believes the course has immense benefit for the sub-region and each participating country.

Over the next two weeks, the 28 participants will consider migration in relation to human rights, development, gender, international cooperation among others.
