Mixed Feelings About The 24-Hour Economy

A sampling of Ghanaians shows they are conflicted about the 24-hour Economy proposed by former President John Dramani Mahama.

The 24-hour Economy is a deliberate policy intervention by the next NDC/Mahama government to encourage and support certain businesses and companies to operate 24/7, preferably in a three-shift system of 8 hours each, by creating an enabling environment that promotes productivity, competitiveness and well-paying jobs.

On the University of Ghana Legon campus on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, RGG NEWS interacted with students to gauge their views regarding the proposed policy of the former president. The students were mixed in their responses. Some were of the view that Ghana having a 24-hour Economy would positively impact the economy. Rosemary a level 300 student said it would cause a drop in the unemployment rate in the country, making a comparison

to the Western world where this system is already in practice. However, she believes for this to be successful, the security of the country and the safety of its citizens must be improved.

A level 300 student who gave her name as Thelma said as much as it would be a good policy worth considering it was not going to be feasible in Ghana in its current state.

She mentioned that “management and infrastructure needed to be strictly implemented in the country and the mindset of Ghanaians must be improved before considering a 24-hour economy”.
