NPP Prepares for By-Election Amidst Surge in Party Candidature

The New Patriotic Party is readying for the by-election to fill the vacant Ejisu seat. This follows the passing of the former MP John Kumah. The NPP has scheduled its primaries for April 13, 2024.

In a conversation with RGGNEWS, Paul Yandon, the NPP’s Communication Director for the Ashanti region, clarified misconceptions regarding the number of candidates vying for the seat.

Contrary to rumours suggesting 18 contenders, Mr Yandon said about 8 individuals have picked up election forms thus far. However, he emphasized that the final count will only be known after the filing deadline on Thursday.

Highlighting the significance of the filing process, Mr Yandon noted that the required payment of 35,000 Cedis would likely influence candidates’ decision to proceed.

Expressing satisfaction with the level of interest from prospective candidates, Mr Yandon attributed the turnout to the appeal and momentum of the NPP within the constituency.

He speculated that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) may not field as many candidates due to the groundwork laid by the late MP, which has bolstered support for the NPP.

Mr Yandon praised John Kumah’s achievements during his tenure, particularly noting his efforts in establishing a party office. He suggested that Mr Kumah’s legacy would serve as a guiding factor for delegates in selecting his successor.

With the Ejisu by-election almost upon us, the NPP anticipates a strong competition among candidates eager to carry on with John Kumah’s legacy and secure victory for the party.
