We don’t need any special laws for women – Lawyer Yaw Anokye

Renowned historian and a lawyer Yaw Anokye Frimpong says there is no need to make special regulations for women in the country. His comments come on the back of the recent appeal to the Asantehene during the celebration of his Silver Jubilee by the Chief of Staff Akosua Frema-Osei Opare to have a say in the bill before parliament.

The Affirmative Action Bill, which seeks to promote gender equality in Ghana, has stalled in Parliament after more than a decade of debate.
The bill seeks to reserve a minimum of 30% of positions in Parliament, government, and other public institutions for women. It also seeks to promote gender equality in education, employment, and other areas.

The bill was first introduced in Parliament in 2011, but it has faced strong opposition from some members of Parliament.

Speaking exclusively to RGG NEWS, the historian believes “from the onset equality of the sexist has always been in existence”.

Adding that in most cases the women perform better than the men in class so he doesn’t see the need to have a special law to promote women.
He further stated, women of today should take a cue from the famous Yaa Asantewaa who fought to make her way through to the top hence they should also strive to make it with or without special laws.

However, the bill has been debated in Parliament on several occasions, but it has never been put to a vote. It is unclear when or if the bill will be passed into law. That being said, the future of the Affirmative Action Bill is uncertain.
