Withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger will affect ECOWAS- International Relations analyst

Konlan Blaise Yennulom an International Relations analyst in an interview with RGGNEWS expressed his concern towards the exit of 3 countries from ECOWAS, saying it would have an implication on the ECOWAS body.
He believes Economic integration, a fundamental aspect of ECOWAS, is set to face challenges with the exit of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

Mr Yennulom mentioned that, the sharing of intelligence on security, which is crucial in the fight against terrorism among ECOWAS states will be affected.

Furthermore, he cited one of the causes of the withdrawal being the alleged influence of the western world in the administration of the ECOWAS region.

Also, he indicated that, the economic sanctions imposed by ECOWAS on these countries following coups have also played a role. For instance, the reduction in power supply to Niger by Nigeria, as part of the sanctions, has taken a toll on the economy and contributed to the decision to withdraw.

He stressed on the importance of returning to the negotiation table, involving all parties to address the issues. He warned that failure to do so could lead to further hardships for citizens.
The analyst called for a resolution to rectify the situation and preserve the stability and cooperation that ECOWAS aims to foster in the West African region.
