Diverse Perspectives on Social Media: A Blessing or a Curse?

There are those who believe social media is what you make of it. Like so many other things in life, both online and off, you get what you put into it. Human beings are inherently social creatures, needing other people to truly thrive. Social media therefore connects people who may never meet in person. It gives people an equal voice, with no gatekeepers when one publishes something. Small and large businesses now have the same opportunities to speak to people – offering everyone many more opportunities.

RGGNEWS conducted a sampling of the views of some students on the impact of social media. At the University of Ghana, Legon, opinion is varied as some students share their views on the influence and reach of social media. It is a toss between good and the bad.
For Maxwell, its nature depends on the user and their intent, while Afia sees it as a blessing, adapting to the evolving world.
Also, Stephen leans towards the blessing side, emphasizing social media’s role in the digital age and its integration with AI, despite recognizing its potential for negative influences.
Nicol Brown, an engineering student, sees social media as a blessing for staying updated on global technology trends and facilitating research.
Furthermore, Deborah a level one hundred student highlights a personal benefit, viewing social media as beneficial for simplifying tasks like online school registration, saving her from the hassle of commuting.
However, Ivy takes a nuanced stance, acknowledging both positive and negative aspects based on usage, citing global communication as a blessing and illicit activities as a curse.
The diverse views echo the complexity of the social media landscape and its multifaceted impact on individuals.
