GRA Begins collection of Emissions Levy

Beginning Thursday, February 1, 2024, the revenue division of the government, the Ghana Revenue Authority, will commence the collection of the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112) from vehicle owners in the country.

This tax measure was approved by Parliament in December 2023 and aims to impose a levy on carbon dioxide equivalent emissions produced by internal combustion engine vehicles. The objective of this levy is to fortify the government’s endeavors in combatting greenhouse gas emissions and advocating for eco-conscious technologies, and moving the country towards attaining its net zero ambitions.

With all necessary arrangements put in place, the Ghana Revenue Authority is ready to commence the collection of this levy, compelling vehicle owners to dutifully contribute varying sums by their vehicle’s class and engine capacity.

As an illustration, individuals who use motorcycles and tricycles will be requested to contribute an annual sum of GH¢75 towards this levy. Likewise, motor vehicles, buses, and coaches with engine capacities of up to 3000 cc will be obligated to allocate GH$150 per year, while those surpassing the 3000 cc threshold, along with cargo and articulated trucks, are to contribute GH¢300 annually.
