Maiden Accountability Forum Held In Accra


The maiden accountability forum by the Office of the Coordinated Mechanism on the safety of Journalists has been held in Accra.
The forum is a media capacity enhancement programme to enable state actors account for the status of investigations and alleged assault on journalists.
It was organized by the National Media Commission (NMC) under the theme “Creating a conducive environment for the practice of journalism in Ghana – the role of stakeholders”.
Presenting the status account of investigations and alleged assault on journalists, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Faustina Agyeiwaa Kodua said figures reported by the Ministry of Information that 28 journalists have been assaulted was false, but rather, the figure stands at 27.
“The cases that have been confirmed with the Ghana Police Service were 10 in number. Under these 10 confirmed cases, five (5) of them have been concluded and the other five (5) were under investigation,” she said.
DCOP Kodua mentioned that the total number of 27 cases which was reported to the Ghana Police (GPS) was grouped into confirmed and unconfirmed cases.
She reiterated her outfits commitment to ensuring the absolute safety of journalists in the country whilst urging journalists to report cases of assault to the GPS and also assist GPS during investigations to ensure the cases are concluded.
The Minister for Information Mr. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah stated that instituting this activity was a step in the right direction. He hoped this would be replicated in other African countries.
